アルファードは孤独なものという意味を持つ星です。うみへび座は全天８８
の星座の中で一番長い星座ですが、このアルファードのそばには輝星がない
ため、いかにも寂びしそうに光っていることからこの名がつけられたといい
ます。
神秘的な孤独の星アルファードは、オレンジいろに輝く２等星です。うみへ
び座は、ギリシャ神話に登場するレルネの谷に棲むヒュドラという九つの頭
を持った怪蛇を表します。アルファード星は、別名コル・ヒュドラェ（ヒュ
ドラの心臓）ともいい、巨大な体の中心で脈打つかのように煌々と輝いてい
ます。
